FIELD: machining. SUBSTANCE: roughness of the processed surface is taken as a parameter of cutting. A standard specimen with a cover is processed at the minimum depth of cutting divisible by the cover thickness. The number of passages necessary to remove all the cover is determined. After each passage the roughness of the processed surface is measured, the obtained values are analyzed. The value of the allowance at the removal of which the least roughness of the processed surface is obtained, is calculated. This allowance is taken as optimal for the given thickness of the cover. EFFECT: enhanced accuracy of measurements.
