FIELD: underwater acoustics. SUBSTANCE: method of distance measurement involves generation and radiation of acoustic signal, radiation of electromagnetic signal used as reference signal in step with it, measurements of phase incursion on low frequency during time of passing of controlled distance, determination of invariant velocity of sound propagation and determination of phase velocity at point of reception by measurement of pressure, oscillatory velocity in direction of propagation and density of medium on high frequency and calculation of distance by measured data. Device includes transmitter 2 of electromagnetic waves, generators 3, 5 of high and low frequencies, multiplier 4, power amplifier 6 and acoustic projector 7 at controlling object 1 and receiver 9 of electromagnetic waves, phase meter 10, detector 11, first and second filters 12, 21, unit 13 setting invariant velocity, first 16 and second 18 acoustic receivers, first 17 and second 19 amplifiers, meters of sound pressure and oscillatory velocity 20, 22 located on controlled object 8.
