FIELD: preparation of organic compounds. SUBSTANCE: o-cresol and 2,6-xylenol are prepared by vapor phase alkylation of phenol with methanol at 250-380 C with an alumina catalyst which is promoted with vanadium and circonium oxides in an amount of 0.1 to 1.5 wt alumina; the vanadium oxide to zirconium oxide weight ratio is 15:1. The weight ratio of phenol and methanol reagents is 1:(0.48-0.73). The volumetric rate of the stock is 0,3-10 r-1. EFFECT: more efficient preparation process. 2 tbl
