FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemical engineering processes and specifically to methods for catalytic alkylation of aromatic amines and nitro compounds. N-methyl-para-phenetidine is obtained from para-phenetidine and/or para-nitrophenetole by N-alkylation with methanol in vapour phase on a dehydration catalyst at temperature of 180-260°C and atmospheric pressure, followed by separation of products by rectification.

EFFECT: possibility of selective production of N-methyl-para-phenetidine with purity of not less than 98% and high output, which enable highly profitable, large-tonnage production.
