FIELD: electric measuring instrumentation. SUBSTANCE: method involves generation of a signal to the electric cable, taking measurements of the induced magnetic field strength, modulation and conversion of the signal, and location of the fault by change of the signal characteristics. The signal frequency is set between the nearest commercial frequency current harmonics, and interference created by the harmonics is filtered out by means of a narrow-band filter based on artificial inductance generators. The device has a generator and a measuring indicator. The latter is provided with a magnetic antenna, an input attenuator, a preselector, a mixer, a heterodyne, an amplifier, a narrow-band active filter, a pointer-type indicator, an acoustic indicator, and a wide-band filter.
