FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: the process for preparing 2,2-methylene-bis-(4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol) is conducted by transalkylation of a mixture of ionol and p-cresol at a 1:(1.3-3) molar ratio in the presence of an acid catalyst at 55-85 C. Monoalkyl-p-cresol is recovered by rectification and crystallization followed by washing the resulting product and condensation thereof with formaldehyde. The catalyst is sulfuric acid in an amount of 0.5-1% of the reaction mixture. The continuous process uses sulfocationite in acid form which is preactivated with para-cresol; condensation of monoalkyl-para-cresol is carried out in an aqueous hydrocarbon emulsion with a 15-20$ formaldehyde solution in water.
