SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for preparing sterically hindered bis-phenols, in particular, to a method for preparing 2,2'-ethylidene-bis-(4,6-di-tert.-butylphenol) used as an effective non-coloring and low toxic stabilizing agent for polymeric materials. Method is carried out by condensation of 2,4-di-tert.-butylphenol with acetaldehyde or paraldehyde at temperature 70-110 C in the presence of acid catalyst. As a catalyst, method involves using sulfoester catalyst as a product of sulfurizing fraction of (C₂₀-C₂₆)-olefins with sulfuric acid being catalyst is taken in the amount 0.1-1.0 wt.-% of 2,4-di-tert.-butylphenol mass and in loading 1-1.3 mole of acetic aldehyde or paraldehyde per 2 moles of 2.4-di-tert.-butylphenol. The process is carried out in hydrocarbon solvent medium taken in the amount 10-50% of the reaction mass. Invention provides elevating yield of the end product, improving its quality and economic indices of process.
