FIELD: catalytic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: 1-naphthol is methylated in ortho-position. The process is carried out by passing steam-gaseous mixture of methanol and naphthol through oxide catalyst at elevated temperature. The process is followed by condensation of reaction product and by their separation. Water is added into reaction mass, molar ratio of 1-naphthol:methanol: water being 1:(2-5):(1-5). Reaction is carried out at 300-400 C, volume rate of reaction mixture being 460-1570 h. Mixture of ferrum oxide, vanadium oxide and manganese oxide is used as said catalyst, atomic ratio Fe:V:Mn being (0.5-1): (0.5-1):(0-0.5). Said catalyst is prepared of tableted oxides or of oxides being granulated together with binder, or by applying said oxides on silica gel. Proposed catalyst also contains SiO, its quantity being 70-75 mass At final step said catalyst is calcined at 500-800 C. EFFECT: improves efficiency of method. 1 tbl
