FIELD: automatization of welding process. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of imparting to an arc oscillation motions across a butt; measuring a welding current; forming an error signal; separating an alternating current component of the welding current; performing full-wave rectifying of it; separating a harmonic component, having frequency of forced oscillation of the arc, from the signal, had been received; determining according to a phase of the above mentioned harmonic component a sign and according to its amplitude a valve of an angle of deflection of a lengthwise axis of the welding burner from a bisecting line of an angle of the butt dressing. Apparatus for performing the method includes filters 2,3,4,15,11,17; synchronous detectors 9,16; rectifiers 14; amplifiers 7,12,19; the switch 18, the current pickup 1, the pickup 10 for detecting a direction of the arc deflection; drive mechanisms for vertical motion, cross motion and angular motion 8,13,20 respectively.
