FIELD: electronic engineering. SUBSTANCE: length of activating pulses between cathode and modulator is 200-700 ms and their repetition rate is 0.5-1.5 Hz; upon arrival of every 50-10 pulses full cathode current increment within definite time interval is measured; to this end, zero potential is applied to modulator and rated voltage, to accelerating electrode; mentioned operations are repeated until full cathode current increment during subsequent measurement becomes zero or is negative; after that, pulses are not applied between cathode and modulator any longer. EFFECT: enlarged service life of cathode and reduced difference in currents of their beams. 2 cl, 2 tbl
