FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: product: substituted imidazole of the formula (I) 
where 
- H, C1-C3-alkyl, methoxy-, nitro- or halogen; 
- H or -CH2-Ph-4-R3; R3 - H, methyl or halogen; R4 - H or OH; R5 - H or R4 and R5 together form the bond; y = 0-4. Method involves the successive interaction of corresponding aldehyde with arylalkylmagnesium halogenide, hydrogenization, oxidation, interaction with arylmagnesium halogenide, reaction of hydrogen transfer, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation and conversion to pharmaceutically acceptable acid additive salts. Synthesized compounds were used as aromatase inhibitors. EFFECT: improved method of synthesis.
