FIELD: instruments. SUBSTANCE: method involves conversion of movement to phase shift of pair of quadrature voltage levels, referencing of reference pair of quadrature voltage levels to said pair by means of phase tracing system using two mismatch signals which are generated by multiplication of two pair of quadrature voltage levels. This conversion is performed in turn for two values of adjacent phase of excitation voltage of phase shifter. At this moment also either direction of phase of one pair of multiplied voltage levels or sign of algebraic addition of mismatch signals are changed. Corresponding device has excitation source, phase shifter, two multipliers, adder, voltage-to-frequency converter, first code-to- phase converter, generator. Second code-to-phase converter, control unit, commutator of phase direction, three switches are introduced to accomplish the goal of invention. Another design of device uses excitation source, phase shifter, two multipliers, voltage-to-frequency converter, code-to-phase converter, generator, control unit, phase direction commutator, controlled adder- subtracter.
