FIELD: gasoline production. SUBSTANCE: high-octane number gasoline component is a mixture of C1-C4-alkyl-tert-C4-C5-alkyl ethers and corresponding tert-C4-C5-alkanols. The former are prepared by simultaneous etherification of tert-C4-C5-olefins with C4-C5-alkanols and liquid-phase hydration in presence of homogeneous acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid followed by separation of reaction mixture into catalyst phase, which is recycled into reaction zone, and into hydrocarbon phase. The latter is washed with water and rectified to produce component containing 10-90 wt % ethers and 10-90 wt % corresponding tert-alkanols, olefin conversion being 70-98%. The product also contains (in wt %) C1-C4-alkanols 0.01-0.06, dimers and polymers of initial olefins 0.01-0.03, and water 0.007-0.009. Washing water is recycled into reaction zone.
