FIELD: production of active carbon sorbents. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to materials finding use as sorbents to remove undesirable admixtures from liquid and gas media and may be applied for purification of drinking water, waste water, gas outbursts in chemical and other industries. Material prepared of carbonized polymer fibers contains, along with acidic, also basic functional groups conferring the material ampholyte properties. The number of the former is reflected by a value of static exchange capacity at least 0.4 meq./g, and that of the latter at least 0.25 meq./g, sorption capacity of material being defined by a value of absorbing methylene blue at least 350 mg/g. To obtain the material, carbon polymer fibers are impregnated with aqueous solution of a compound degradable at the temperature of activation of material with formation of ammonia and other gas products, whereupon material undergoes activation. Arrangement for continuous activation of material includes activation chamber, means for feeding material to be activated into the chamber, means for discharging activated material and, additionally, means for preliminarily impregnating material with aforementioned solution made, for example, as a vessel for impregnating solution positioned on the side of the raw material inlet into activation chamber and being connected to this chamber. Activated material, when used for drinking water purification, allows removal of up to 99.5% phenols, 96% petroleum products, 98% pesticides, and 99% heavy metal ions.
