FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy; may be used to process cobalt concentrates containing as admixtures heavy non-ferrous metals and iron. SUBSTANCE: cobalt concentrate containing cobalt in trivalent state is converted to slurry in metal chloride solution and slurry is subjected to treatment as redox potential value of not more than 0.9 in presence of reductant which is added in excess amount with respect to reaction-capable chloride. Concentrate is converted to slurry in chloride solution of metal selected from group consisting of nickel, cobalt, magnesium, calcium, aluminium. As metal chloride solution it is possible to use process liquor resulting from treatment of slurry with hydrochloric acid, and reductant can be constituted by metal selected from group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron aluminium or alloy containing one or more of said metals. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 4 cl, 1 tbl
