FIELD: manufacture of building materials. SUBSTANCE: raw meal for manufacturing heat insulating material contains, wt.-%: basalt staple fibers up to 12 mcm in diameter, 75-85; bentonite clay, 10-15; leather glue, 5-10. Clay and glue are first stirred for 4-5 min in hydrobeater to produce hydromass, which is then supplemented with preliminarily shaped basalt staple fibers and stirred for further 4-5 min. Resultant material, once shaped and dried at 290-310 C, is characterized with break strength 0.9-1.6 MPa, volume mass 150-250 kg/cu.m, heat conductivity coefficient 0.045-0.048 W/m oC, and heat shrinkage 1 at 800 C. Material is fit for manufacturing construction- heat insulation panels in building, shipbuilding, and aircraft industries. EFFECT: improved performance characteristics. 2 tbl
