FIELD: biotechnology, enzymology. SUBSTANCE: new bacterial strain that is a producer of nitrilase is isolated from the soil of acrylonitrile production using acetonitrile as a selecting agent. Based on morphological, cultural and biochemical properties the strain is referred to genus Alcaligenes. Strain Alcaligenes species VKPM B-6706 shows high nitrilase activity (up to 915, 134.7 and 58.5 mM/g x h with acrylonitrile, propionitrile and butyronitrile as substrates, respectively). Strain shows enzymatic activity at pH range = 4-9.5, optimal value pH = 8.0. Temperature range of nitrilase activity for cells of the strain Alcaligenes sp. VKPM B-6706 - 2-65 C, maximal cell activity with respect to acrylonitrile - at 50 C. Strain does not require addition of toxic nitriles to culturing medium. Strain can be used for biotechnological process of preparing acrylic and other carboxylic acids. EFFECT: enhanced effectiveness of strain indicated above. 3 tbl
