FIELD: production of salts of alkali metals. SUBSTANCE: slab of metal lithium is placed into chamber being filled by nitrogen, surface of said slab is locally heated by electric arc, laser or high frequency current. Thus inoculation of lithium nitride is prepared and local heating is switched off. Slab is allowed to stand in said chamber in atmosphere of nitrogen at atmospheric pressure to complete interaction of lithium and nitrogen. Maximal temperature of slab is not more 150 C, duration of the process is not more 48 h. Yield of desired compound is not less 99 %. EFFECT: improved quality of desired product.
