FIELD: computer engineering, in particular, peripheral data storage devices on removable magnetic media. SUBSTANCE: method involves generation of source binary information sequence of recording signals, which duration is equal to encoded information characters. Source binary information sequence of recording signals is preliminary converted to sequence of numbers which are represented in number system with radix r which is greater than 2. duration of recording signals is equal to information characters of r- radix numbers. When source binary information sequence is converted, it is divided into groups of binary numbers which provide input code words of same length. They are converted to output r- radix words which correspond to shortest combinations of recording signals. Required redundant output r-radix code words conform to ratio between ratio of lengths of input and output words. In addition recording density may be further increased if during conversion of source binary information sequence of recording signals, most frequent input code words of different length are converted in output code words which have shortest combinations of recording signals. EFFECT: increased density. 3 cl, 1 dwg, 2 tbl
