FIELD: devices for magnetic recording, in particular, for on-board recording boxes. SUBSTANCE: method involves measurement of density of parts of magnetic carrier and detection of their optical density, its amplification and attenuation for respectively parts with recorded pulses and without them. Said amplification and attenuation is run in three regions, which boundaries are selected according to histograms for distribution of coefficients of optical density of two areas, area which has recorded pulses and one which has no. Boundary of area is detected as coefficient of optical density for maximal value of histogram. Tracks of recording are detected by jump in coefficients of optical density. recorded pulses of tracks are detected by exceeding of threshold value. This decoding process is run by addition of weight coefficient. EFFECT: increased functional capabilities. 2 dwg
