FIELD: synthesis of organic compounds, more specifically processes for preparing trifluoromethyl-3,4-dichlorobenxene. SUBSTANCE: claimed invention describes new process for preparing trifluoromethyl-3,4-dichlorogenzene with yield of not higher than 92% which comprises treating trifluoromethyl- 4-chlorobenzene with elementary chlorine in the presence of catalytic amounts of chloric iron complex with phosphorus pentachloride at trifluoromethyl-4- chlorobenzene to chlorine molar ratio of 1:1.1-1.2 at room temperature. Chloric iron-phosphorus pentachloride catalyst complex is formed by chlorination of iron chips and phosphorus trichloride in trifluoromethyl-4- chlorobenzene directly in reactor. The claimed process is advantageous in that yield of the desired product is as high as 92%, it is ecological, simple to be carried out and initial stock includes largeton products of domestic industry.
