FIELD: organic synthesis, more particularly processes for preparing N-methylated amines, more specifically process for preparing N,N,N′,N′- tetramethylethylene diamine. SUBSTANCE: claimed process comprises reacting ethylene diamine, formaldehyde and formic acid. Reaction is carried out in the presence of sulfuric acid in two stages. In the first stage ethylene diamine and sulfuric acid are successively added to formaldehyde, in the second stage formic acid is gradually used in certain amounts. Optimum ethylene diamine to formaldehyde to sulfuric acid to formic acid molar ratio is 1:4:1:4, respectively. EFFECT: more efficient preparation process. 3 cl
