FIELD: agriculture. SUBSTANCE: method involves positioning vertical grate fences in predetermined area of field, with space between fences being equal to standard width of pit or pile; orienting fences toward prevailing winter winds; positioning shields above fences; filling space defined by base and fences with sugar beet harvested from the field. Freezing process is intensified by reduced area of contact between pit or pile and warm ground of base and under the action of wind upon vertical face of pit or pile. Frozen through pit or pile is warmed with curtains and heat-insulating covering put at the top of pit or pile. Prior to removal of roots, heat-insulating material and grid fence are withdrawn and roots are loaded on vehicles. EFFECT: increased efficiency and prolonged storage life of roots. 4 cl, 2 dwg
