FIELD: mechanical engineering, materials handling facilities. SUBSTANCE: in proposed method elongation of cable is determined as cable shift distance within present time interval. Value of cable elongation is found as summary value of shift distance. Summary value of cable shift is automatically reset to 0 when hook assembly reaches maximum lifting height to renew point of cable elongation reading and correct error in measured cable elongation. Length of hook assembly hanging from top of boom or bracket is found from this value to calculate hook lifting height. Calculated hook lifting height or position of hook assembly is represented on display relative to fixed index or outline. Crane operator can control position of hook assembly from display. EFFECT: enlarged operating capabilities and improved reliability.
