FIELD: transport, agriculture, navigation, topography, geodesy, machine-tool industry. SUBSTANCE: transponders are mounted on object to be controlled according to preset law with reference to coordinate points, then object is irradiated, and responses from transponders are detected basing on which coordinates of object are identified. Object is irradiated by radio pulse radiated by antenna system with narrow direction pattern in VHF or UHF band. Passive radio transponders are used in this method with circle diagram antenna system. Radio transponders are placed in medium, for instance, under ground, and number is binary code is formed in each transponder. Then radiator is shifted in two relatively perpendicular directions, for instance, North-South or West-East, and maximum amplitudes of response signal of high-order bit of re-radiated code are measured, and coordinates of point of intersection of perpendiculars on terrain plan erected from points of corresponding maximum values are determined. Then coordinates are identified by comparing binary codes of measured and standard coordinates. EFFECT: enlarged operating capabilities. 3 cl, 3 dwg
