FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: process is carried out at elevated temperature and pressure in presence of alumina/cobalt/nickel/molybdenum catalyst and secondary contact material, namely alumina/cobalt/nickel/molybdenum hydrofining catalyst employed for all 16000 h and retaining 10-50% activity of primary catalyst. Charge of secondary catalyst in reactor constitutes 3-9% that of primary catalyst. Catalysts are activated by elementary sulfur which is charged with secondary catalyst. Invention results in producing diesel fuel with 0.09-0.4 wt % sulfur and gasoline fractions with 0.8-0.4 ppm sulfur. EFFECT: enhanced hydrofining efficiency. 1 tbl
