FIELD: production of fuel elements. SUBSTANCE: fuel element has composite supporting member allowing fuel element to be retained in cigarette during smoking. According to one version, fuel element is composed of at least two different materials which are in contact one with another along their whole length. One of materials is of combustible type and other material has low combustion rate as compared to combustible material or, preferably, is of incombustible type. Incombustible material, such as graphite, selected for mentioned fuel member has high heat exchange capacity. In recommended versions, incombustible material supporting or retaining component projects beyond periphery of combustible material to cooperate with isolating enclosure embracing fuel element and retain it during smoking. Fuel member is burnt at lower average temperatures as compared to known carbonaceous fuel elements. EFFECT: increased efficiency and simplified construction. 16 cl, 13 dwg, 1 tbl
