METHOD OF DEVICE FOR VITRIFYING WASTES Russian patent published in 1998 - IPC

Abstract RU 2108632 C1

FIELD: treatment of radioactive and toxic wastes by vitrification. SUBSTANCE: device has melting pot and revolving impeller for stirring. Melting pot walls and impeller function as electrodes. Wastes mixed up with vitrifying material are fed to melting and mixing zone of melting pot and mixture is melted by passing electric current through electrodes and melt. Simultaneously, molten mass is stirred to form froth. Frothed mass obtained is consolidated in settling and drain zone. Melt is additionally consolidated by separating gaseous components from it and poured into containers. Device is provided with mechanism for impeller positioning within pot to vary depth of settling zone. Used primarily as glass-forming material is frit an procedure is mainly used for radioactive wastes. Device can run continuously or periodically and is space- saving. EFFECT: improved capacity of process due to fast melting of vitrifying materials and improved filling capacity of vitrified block with wastes. 19 cl, 3 dwg, 1 tbl
