FIELD: ceramics. SUBSTANCE: ceramics of invention is especially good when used as cutting tool for high-speed chip-forming mechanical metalworking. Ceramics is advantageously composed of at least 85 vol % of silicon beta-nitride and less than about 5 vol % of intergranular space. Material also includes more than 0.2 wt % magnesium oxide and more than 0.2 wt % yttrium oxide, their summary content being below 5 wt %. Porosity of material is less than 0.2 vol %.
