FIELD: examination and analysis of materials. SUBSTANCE: at first induction period τo of fresh oil chemiluminescent radiation is determined. To this end, oil is heated up to t=(0.6-1.2) tf, where tf is oil flash temperature in open crucible. As soon as temperature t is attained, recording of chemiluminescent radiation intensity is started. Recording is continued till the moment chemiluminescent radiation intensity is n=4-10 times as high as in the first 1-3 min of recording, after which recording is stopped. Time period from starting of recording to its end is taken for induction period τo of fresh oil chemiluminescent radiation intensity. This done, induction period τo.t of oil with preceding operating time To.t is determined. Remaining service life Tr.s of oil is also determined. Devices intended for method realization has light-proof chamber with test vessel for oil positioned in container comprising the low-melting alloy. Device also includes heating element, thermal regulator, thermocouple, temperature indicating device connected to thermocouple, light guide, light proof chamber with photoelectronic multiplier, its power supply unit, photoelectronic multiplier current amplifier, indication unit, and data processing unit.
