FIELD: analytical chemistry. SUBSTANCE: analyzed object in atomized form is fed into plasma of gaseous discharge of atmospheric pressure with such rate that particles of metal impurity entered analytical zone in sequence one by one to measure characteristics and concentration of metal impurity in the form of individual particles. Prepared specimen is additionally dissolved in organic solvent, number of particles is found in initial and dissolved specimens and factor evaluating quality of operating oil is determined by relation of their numbers. Average size of particles is evaluated by distribution of particles obtained during analysis of dissolved specimen. Level of wear-out of individual units of machines and mechanisms is determined with due account of number of particles of microimpurities and their elementary composition. EFFECT: possibility of proximate determination of concentration, average size, number of particles and elementary composition of each particle. 3 tbl
