SUBSTANCE: proposed method consists in drilling of recess to mark of canal bottom, in its filling with water to preset depth h, in keeping of constant level of water, in measurement of setting of level, in calculation of rate of setting of level, in registration of value of established setting rate of level at various magnitudes of h within specified range of depths of filling up of recess . Dependence $$$ is established and specific losses of water freely filtered through for are found for various values of h by formula $$$ sq.m/day, where $$$ is rate of setting of level determined by dependence $$$ m/day; B is width of water surface in canal.
