FIELD: organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: vinyl cyclohexene can be used as original material for producing epoxides, organoaluminium compounds and other valuable products of organic synthesis. Claimed method is carried out by dimerization of 1,3-butadiene in liquid phase at 70-150 C in the presence of metal complex catalyst based on carbonyl iron and sodium nitrite followed by recovery of the desired product by standard procedures, e.g. by rectification. Butadiene and mixtures thereof with hydrocarbons and/or solvents are contacted with catalyst including dodecacarbonyl triferrate or dihydride undecacarbonyl triferrate, or complex salts of undercacarbonyl hydride trifferate anion with amines at Fe:Na atomic ratio of (0.2-5.0):1.
