FIELD: chemistry of polymers. SUBSTANCE: present invention describes method of preparing water soluble acetone-aldehyde resins useful as binding compositions for producing plastics, polymer concretes, molds for ceramic industry, and plastic foams. Process of condensation of acetone with paraform is carried out at medium pH of 11.3-12.5 in the presence of alkali catalyst, i.e. 20-30 % aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide in amount of 0.010 to 0.040 mole per mole of acetone. Synthesis time is decreased, resin drying stage is eliminated and resin toxicity is reduced. EFFECT: more efficient preparation method. 2 tbl
