FIELD: gas treatment. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to treating sulfur compounds-containing gases involving Claus reaction or hydrolysis. Catalyst is shaped into alumina-based porous particles and is distinguished by that summary pore volume formed by pores with diameter above 0.1 mcm exceeds 12 ml per 100 g of catalyst and that formed by pores with diameter 12 mcm is such that ratio of the latter to the former is at least 0.65. Claus reaction is utilized when gases to be treated contain sulfur compounds, and hydrolysis reaction is utilized for gases containing organic sulfur compounds. EFFECT: enhanced gas treatment efficiency. 9 cl, 2 dwg , 4 tbl
