FIELD: conversion and decoding of cartographic images, prediction of oil and gas fields prior to start of geological prospecting operations. SUBSTANCE: images of boundaries of sections with constant height of locality, boundaries of elevating strikes of linear elements and boundaries of sections with prevailing direction of beds of rivers are formed from initial image of specified area of ground surface. Blocks, mesablocks and macroblocks are formed by images of sections, morphostructural nodes are marked in images of boundaries between them. Subset of promising nodes which vicinities are recognized as areas of authentic depositions of fields are determined by their characteristics. Small blocks in images of boundaries between which small morphostructural nodes are marked are formed in these areas, subset of small morphostructural nodes which are assumed as geodetically surveyed areas of deposition of large fields of oil and gas are marked by their characteristics.
