FIELD: mechanical engineering; machining of cylinder-piston group. SUBSTANCE: upper edge of piston ring is used as cutting edge in finishing of cylinder-piston group. Cylinder spaces are covered with micrometric layer of insulating coating. Sound and light control sources are used to provide accurate setting of boring tool used in machining. Micrometric position of ring upper edge is determined to provide correct setting of top of boring tool cutting edge to form protective groove providing free passing of piston ring in micrometric tolerable deflection field. EFFECT: enhanced accuracy of forming operations and checking of edge position. 2 tbl
