FIELD: poultry farming. SUBSTANCE: method involves evaluating and selecting one-day chickens by inclination of bird caruncle to the left side. Chickens with caruncle inclined to the left side have live weight gain exceeding that of chickens with caruncle inclined to the right side by 9.8-12.6%, survival rate - by 3.8%. Feed consumption per 1 kg of live weight gain of left-side caruncle inclination chickens is lower than that of right-side caruncle inclination chickens by 11.6%. Hens with left-side caruncle inclination have higher live weight, egg yield, egg weight and survival rate as compared to hens with right-side caruncle inclination. EFFECT: increased efficiency and high precision in evaluating young birds. 3 tbl
