FIELD: monitoring of environment, in particular, in mining art and chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: the method consists in the fact that presence of explosive gas is monitored by installation of stationary instruments indicating the intolerable concentration of gas in volume. The specific feature of the method is that appearance of the lower limit of explosiveness of gaseous mixture is detected in several points of monitoring; to this end, forced inflammation of atmosphere in an explosion-proof combustion chamber is accomplished, and the distance between the monitoring points is taken depending on the length of the allowable emergency gassing space of generation with gas concentration exceeding the lower limit of explosiveness, and determined by mathematical expression. The monitoring device has a monitoring unit connected through a trunk cable to several sensors of indication of the lower limit of explosiveness of gaseous mixture. EFFECT: trustworthy and operational signalling on formation of explosive methane-air mixture with a gas content exceeding the lower limit of explosiveness. 2 cl, 1 dwg
