FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy, in particular, designs of electrolyzers for production of aluminum. SUBSTANCE: lining having carbon blocks and heat insulating layer contains upper protective layer made of rammed quartz sand 10-60 mm thick. Quartz sand grains size is within 0.4-0.15 mm. Lower protective layer consists either of two steel sheets placed horizontally one above the other with gap of 1-3 mm filled with alumina, or a layer of ceramic material which may be used in the form of red bricks. Such lining prevents fluorine salts from getting into heat-insulating lining. EFFECT: prolonged service life of lining, and improved performance characteristics of electrolyzer. 4 cl, 2 dwg
