METHOD AND DEVICE FOR ADAPTIVE RENDERING OF HALF-TONE IMAGES Russian patent published in 1999 - IPC

FIELD: computer engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves splitting substrate regions into elements and treating them dark or black depending on comparison of their weights to values of multiple-level samples of corresponding regions of substrate which have these elements. Two types of weights distribution are used. First distribution is identical for all regions of substrate and provides generation of raster structure on copy to reproduce maximal number of half-tones on original image. Weights of this distribution are used for rendering background pieces of original image without figure. Second type of weights distribution is used for each piece of substrate dynamically using image field from samples of original image regions corresponding to given and adjacent regions of substrate. These values are used for rendering strokes, contours and small details with maximal contrast on original image. Fuzzy indiscriminate contours of incomplete contrast are rendered using mix of first and second weights in ratio depending on strength of contour and divisibility of image. Corresponding device for rendering has write signal generator, which interrupts light beam, which exposes elements of substrate regions. Its first input is connected to main output of video signal source. Its second and third inputs are connected to outputs of sources of first and second weights respectively. Its fourth input is connected to output of contour strength analyzer. Inputs of second source and analyzer are connected to both main and additional outputs of video signal source.
