FIELD: powders of metal oxides; may be used in oxide ceramics. SUBSTANCE: powder of metal oxide, excluding alpha-modification of aluminum oxide, containing polyhedral particles, each having at least six planes. The powder particles are sizing from 0.1 to 300 mcm and value of D90/D10=10 or less, where D10 and D90 are particle sizes with accumulation of 10% and 90%, respectively, counting from the size corresponding to minimum size of particles on curve of growth of particle sizes. This powder of metal oxide contains low number of sintered particles and possesses narrow range of particle sizes and homogeneous particle shape. Titanium oxide powder is one of examples of metal oxide powders. It presents polyhedral particles with eight planes and has rutile modification. The method of metal oxide powder production includes firing of metal oxide or its predecessor in atmosphere of hydrogen halide or molecular halide and vapor or molecular halide. Process may be carried out in the presence of inoculating crystals. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 31 cl, 21 dwg, 4 tbl
