FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention is referred to the field of chemistry, more specifically, to alfa-aluminum oxide appropriate for sapphire production. Alfa-aluminum oxide powder has the purity of at least 99.99% by weight, specific surface area of 0.1 - 2.0 m2/g, relative density of 55 - 90% and sealed porosity of 4% and less. As per alfa-aluminum oxide particle weight distribution by size obtained through dry screening test according to JIS K0069 (1992), the number of particles with the size of less than 75 microns amounts to 5% by weight or less; the number of particles with the size of more than 2.8 mm amounts to 15% by weight or less; and at least one distribution function maximum appears in the particle size range from 100 microns or more to less than 850 microns.
EFFECT: production of sapphire that has very few voids with no crucible oxidation caused at the thermal smelting stage.
