FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: 1,2-dichloroethane is prepared by catalyst reaction of ethylene with chlorine at elevated temperature on catalyst consisting of sodium chloride and iron (III) chloride at molar ratio from 0.05: 1 to 0.48:1 in inert organic solvent and the desired product is then isolated. The claimed process is carried out with said sodium chloride to iron (III) chloride molar ratio is maintained. Inert organic solvent is preferably circulating 1,2-dichloroethane, and process is carried out in inert gas atmosphere at temperature of 70- 90 C and pressure of 1,4-1,6 bar. EFFECT: significant reduction in formation of undesirable 1,1,2- trichloroethane. 7 cl, 3 ex, 1 dwg, 1 tbl
