FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: present invention describes process for preparing 3- methylpiperidine by cyclization of 2-methyl-1,5-diaminopentane in gas phase at 300-400 C and pressure by 0-10 bar above atmospheric pressure in the presence of catalyst such as activated aluminium oxide, mixed aluminium and silicon oxide or natural or synthetic zeolite which have specific surface area greater than 40 sq m/q. The claimed process makes it possible to retain catalyst activity over prolonged period of time to obtain the desired product of high yield. The presence invention also describes process for preparing 3- methylpyridine by further transformation in the presence of dehydrogenation catalyst.
