FIELD: catalysts in organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to catalysts containing (i) product of reaction of metal halide where metal is selected from the group including: aluminum, zirconium, tin, tantalum, titanium, gallium, antimony, phosphorus, iron, boron and their mixture; and (ii) bound surface hydroxide groups of refractory inorganic oxide and zero-valence metal selected from the group including: platinum, palladium, nickel, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, and their mixture. Method of periodical regeneration of catalyst partially deactivated in liquid- phase C2-6-alkylation process consists in removing liquid hydrocarbons from catalyst and treating remaining catalyst with hydrogen at pressure from 6.9 to 13790 kPa and temperature from 10 to 300 C for 1 to 20 h.
