FIELD: polymer production. SUBSTANCE: styrene-acrylate copolymer latexes find use as antistatic and electrically dissipative materials and coatings in paper, shipbuilding, and electronic industries, in photographic materials production, and in instrument-making. In particular, preparation of such latexes involves copolymers based on vinylaromatic compounds, alkyl (meth)acrylates, and comonomer(s) containing functional groups, which take part in a two-step water-emulsion polymerization in presence of water-soluble radical-type initiator and a surfactant to form latex of copolymer particles of nucleus-shell structure. Method of invention is distinguished by that, in the first process step, mixture of vinylaromatic compound, alkyl (meth)acrylate, ad ethylene glycol dimethacryl ester (cross-linking agent) at weight ratio (20-80):(19.9079):(0.1-1.0) is subjected to copolymerization; trimethylalkylammonium halide is used as surfactant; 2,2'-azo-bis(2- aminopropane) dihydrochloride is used as water-soluble initiator; in the second process step, mixture of vinylaromatic compound, alkyl (meth)acrylate, and amino group-containing monomer(s) is copolymerized in presence of inoculating latex obtained in the first step to form latex of copolymer with direct morphology of nucleus-shell particles with first-step copolymer nucleus and second-step copolymer shell.
