FIELD: manufacture of hot rolled sheets. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of tracking shape of end portions of rolled piece by means of tracking members and forming signal in order to energize flying shears for cutting leading end portion of strip at detecting constant width of rolled piece and for cutting tail end portion of strip at detecting decreased width of rolled piece by means of tracking members. The last are arranged along line normal relative to rolled piece motion direction. Signal for energizing flying shears for cutting leading end portion is generated at detecting constant width of rolled piece and continuity of line of its cross section and signal for cutting tail end portion at detecting changed width of rolled piece or broken line of its cross section by means of tracking members. Array of photodetectors is used as tracking members. EFFECT: enhanced accuracy at detecting and removing end portions of rolled piece having width differed from necessary one, deep recesses and(or) discontinuities, elimination of wear of tracking members. 2 cl, 5 dwg, 2 ex
