FIELD: medicine. SUBSTANCE: method involves investigating phagocytic activity of neutrophils in smears to determine mean value of ingested objects number per 1 neutrophil (phagocytic number) and phagocyte activity index calculated by dividing the number of the objects ingested by active phagocytes by the number of low activity and no activity phagocytes. The phagocytic indices values are evaluated as percent ratios of their mean values in healthy people calculated from data received from concurrently examined donor. Results of preliminary donor examination are grouped depending on phagocytic number values. Reference phagocyte activity index is calculated by dividing mean sums of phagocytized objects number in the case of neutrophils ingesting 3 and more objects per 1-2 objects. Phagocyte activity index is calculated in carrying out diagnostic examination and it is divided by index value in standard having the same phagocytic number value as that of the patient under examination. Index control value calculated from the standard is equal to 0.7-1.4. The index value being lower than 0.7, phagocytic protection insufficiency is to be diagnosed. The value being higher than 1.4, phagocytic protection activation is to be diagnosed. EFFECT: enhanced accuracy and simplicity of the method. 3 tbl
