SHAFT SEAL Russian patent published in 1999 - IPC

FIELD: sealing of automobile engine crankshaft when mounting of seal is possible only in plane perpendicular to axis of shaft. SUBSTANCE: seal includes split multi-layer flexible ring and band-type spring received by its circular groove. Flexible ring has U-shaped cross section and is mounted in taper slot of cylinder block head and half-holder secured on head. Flexible ring has layer of nonwoven textile material vulcanized onto it at point of contact with shaft. Connection of flexible material of seal with nonwoven textile material engageable with shaft provides for enhanced reliability due to plasticity of one material and hygroscopicity of other material. U-shaped cross section of flexible ring provides for reliable interference fit in taper slot of unit. EFFECT: enhanced reliability. 2 dwg
